3 Fun Kids Shows for Yoruba Language and Culture

If you are a parent looking to engage your child in Yoruba language, you may have found yourself wondering where to find resources, as they can often seem few and far between when compared with those available in English. Fortunately, things are changing for the better and educational content for kids is becoming more widely available! Here, we look at some great examples of kids shows and other engaging content to help your child learn Yoruba now!


1. Bino and Fino



Bino and Fino is an educational cartoon series which came about around 2007 when its creator Adamu Waziri realised the massive lack of African made children’s educational cartoons. Setting out to redress this imbalance, he created Bino and Fino. The show has since produced educational episodes in multiple languages, including Yoruba and English. There are currently 4 episodes available in Yoruba, which teach about the Great Walls of Benin, the importance of recycling and even challenge gender stereotypes! Bino and Fino also have fun educational music which teaches about the beauty of African languages, foods and cultures, which is available on YouTube and Spotify.

2. SoKidz TV



SoKidz TV is a children’s platform which produces music and educational content in Yoruba and other languages in a fun engaging way. The platform has produced educational shows such as Bola The Bear, a Yoruba Folktale series and even Afrisign, a show to teach African children sign language! The Yoruba Folktale series features an adaptation of the much beloved story of the tortoise and the cracked shell. The four-part series teaches about the importance of teamwork, problem solving and sharing, and even features a traditional Yoruba primary school song!

3. Iwaju



Set in a futuristic Lagos Nigeria, Iwaju is about a young girl from a wealthy family named Tola and her best friend Kole as they discover the mysteries and dangers of their hidden worlds. Whilst the series is spoken mostly in English and Pidgin English, the series marks a significant milestone for Nigerian animation and representation in children’s programming. Founded by Tolu Olowofoyeku, Olufikayo Adeola, and Hamid Ibrahim via their company Kugali in partnership with Disney, this series offers a look into the different facets of life in Nigeria.
